545.
** DIGITAL'S 'TROJAN HORSE' - OR JUST ANOTHER ALSO-RAN?
(BW, 5/24/93, pg. 36)
On May 25, DEC will claim to have the fastest machine ever to run
Microsoft's Windows. At the heart of the new PC is DEC's Alpha
technology. Despite spitfire speed, a lack of software has hobbled Alpha
sales. Analyst estimate hat DEC has sold fewer than 4,000 Alpha machines.
With VAX sales faltering, Wall Street now figures DEC will post a $200
million operating loss for fiscal 1993, ending June 26.
546.
** DEC PREPARES FOR NT APPLICATION DELUGE
(CW, 5/17/93, pg. 38)
DEC will announce the release of more than 250 applications that have been
ported to NT or are in the process of being ported and have completion dates
in May.
547.
** DEC COSIES UP, MAY OFFER HABITAT PERSONALITY
(UGX, 5/24/93, pg. 1)
DEC may be close to becoming a COSE member and is considering offering
its Habitat technology to COSE. Habitat is a technology for allowing an
operating system to take on the personality of another as it does with Unix
SVR4 on its OSF/1 platform.

** HEWLETT POSTS STRONG RESULTS FOR 2ND PERIOD. PROFIT
AND REVENUE RISES INDICATE FIRM LEAVING ITS PROFIT-
MARGIN RUT
(WSJ, 5/19/93, pg. A3)
HP said net income for the quarter ended April 30 rose 7.4% from a strong
year-ago period to $347 million. For the same period, revenue jumped more
than 21% to a record $5.1 billion and orders surged 28% to $5.4 billion.
HP's printers had a 33% jump in orders for the quarter, to $4.1 billion.
Second-quarter results also were aided by "extremely strong" sales of HP's
midrange Unix-based systems and excellent workstation sales.
549.
** YOKOGAWA HEWLETT-PACKARD WINS MITSUI TO MARKET
SOFTBENCH
(UGX, 5/24/93, pg. 7)
The traditional Japanese trading companies constantly flirt with the
computer industry, and trading giant Mitsui has signed up with Yokogawa
HP to market HP's SoftBench software engineering system for integrating
development tools.
550.
** FUJITSU LICENSES SOFTBENCH
(UGX, 5/24/93, pg. 7)
Fujitsu is now a licensee of HP's SoftBench. Fujitsu will create software
engineering products based on the SoftBench Framework for use on its own
systems.
551.
** COMMENTS
(UGX, 5/24/93, pg. 6)
Hitachi is to plug SoftBench, HP's CASE environment into the next version
of its ObjectIQ development environment.
552.
** HP CHANGES 'ELITE' ELIGIBILITY
(CW, 5/17/93, pg. 66)
Under the old criteria, a company would gain special status by purchasing
100 or more HP 3000 minicomputers. The unit volume criteria became
antiquated as HP rolled out larger machines that perform the job of several
smaller machines. The 100 plus club has been replaced with the Customer
Advisory Council.
553.
** COMPUTER ASSOCIATES SHIPS CA-UNICENTER FOR HP UNIX
BOXES
(UGX, 5/24/93, pg. 2)
CA will begin delivering its systems management product, CA-Unicenter,
for client/server environments on HP 9000 Model 800 and 700 systems.
The product will be available on Sun, IBM RS/6000s, IBM AS/400s, and
Novell by the end of the year.
554.
** HP HAS BIGGEST INSTALLATION IN EASTERN EUROPE AT
HUNGARIAN STATISTICS OFFICE
(UGX, 5/24/93, pg. 4)
HP and the Hungarian Central Statistics Office have formally signed an $11
million contract for the replacement of the Office's IBM 4381 mainframe
with an open system. The deal was effectively concluded in November, but
had been pending final approval by the European Community. Some 18
companies originally bid for the contract, with Bull and IBM losing in the
final stages.
555.
** HEWLETT-PACKARD EDGES GINGERLY TOWARDS UNIX SVR4
COMPLIANCE
(UGX, 5/24/93, pg. 5)
HP believes that COSE is the key to its future Unix strategy and is now
admitting that it is unlikely to incorporate any of the Open Software
Foundation's current operating system technology into its own HP-UX. The
firm has indicated an intent to move towards greater compliance with the
rival Unix SVR4 kernel and adopt the System Interface Definition version 3.
556.
** MULTIPROCESSING ON THE DESKTOP IS HP's "BALANCING
ACT"
(UGX, 5/24/93, pg. 5)
HP denies there is any pressure on it to deliver multiprocessing workstations
despite Sun's multiple SuperSparc CPUs. HP says Sun needs
multiprocessing desktop solutions because Sun can't get competitive
performance from uniprocessor implementations of Texas Instruments
SuperSparc RISC technology.

557.
** IBM UNVEILS SOFTWARE PRICING SCHEME TO REVIVE
COLLAPSING MAINFRAME SALES
(WSJ, 5/20/93, pg. B6)
IBM announced a sweeping new software pricing scheme. One plan is a
"measured usage" approach that will bill customers for their actual use of a
mainframe computer and the number of times the software is called on.
558.
** IBM WILL OFFER PREFERRED STOCK FOR THE FIRST TIME
(WSJ, 5/25/93, pg. C23)
IBM will offer its first preferred stock ever. The offering could give IBM
flexibility if more employees than already planned for decide to exercise
ongoing buyout offers.
559.

(UGX, 5/24/93, pg. 3)
The new RS/6000 Model 230, runs at 45MHz and starts at $4,800. The
workstation version, the 23T, starts at $8,500. There is also a 50MHz
Powerstation 36T and a 62MHz 37T ranging from $12,950 to $29,070. A
new 550L entry-level deskside server is now available for $25,500.

562.
** SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
(IW, 5/17/93, pg. 10)
NCR introduced a new version of its systems management software for
multivendor Unix machines. StarSentry Computer Manager 3.5 provides
distributed scheduling for, and tighter integration between, NCR's own
systems and those from HP, IBM, Sun, and Unisys.

SUN ARTICLES
***********************************************************
563.
** SUN VS. THE HEAVYWEIGHTS: DOES IT HAVE A SHOT?
(BW, 5/31/93, pg. 85)
Sun is breaking out of its engineering niche and selling workstations to all
sorts of businesses. But as it moves into this market, Sun enters waters
where much bigger fish swim - such as IBM, HP, and DEC.
564.
** COMMENTS
(UGX, 5/24/93, pg. 8)
Sun promises new graphics and image processing subsystems that will take
advantage of its new-found multiprocessing prowess. Sun used to say "the
network is the computer" - now it thinks "the network is the business".
565.
** COMMENTS
(UGX, 5/24/93, pg. 8)
Sun has come up with a variety of severance packages. One of them
reportedly calls for two months severance plus a month for every year
worked. Sun could lose some valuable people. Sun plans on cutting a
thousand from its rolls which stood at 13,381 at the end of March.

566.
** CLIENT/SERVER OR BUST
(MRS, 5/11/93, pg. 15)
A survey of software buying trends at large corporate sites has found the
industry on the verge of a major buying spree. And the software companies
most likely to benefit from opening IS budgets are those ready to deliver
client/server solutions.
567.
** NO COMMENT. INDUSTRY RUMBLINGS NOT YET CONFIRMED
(MRS, 5/11/93, pg. 3)
The US. Commerce Department estimates that American businesses spend
about $14,000 per worker on computer automation equipment.
568.
** SUPERCOMPUTERS: A WAY TO SCREEN OUT THE HYPE?
(BW, 5/31/93, pg. 83)
The market for high-end computers is confusing for the scientist and
engineers who use them. A computer scientist, David J. Kuck is lobbying
federal agencies to create a "national performance center" that would cut
through the hype and help customers evaluate the real performance trade-
offs of competing designs.
569.
** LIMIT ON LAPTOP TIME
(IW, 5/17/93, pg. 16)
American Airlines has banned the use of portable computers and CD players
whenever a plane flies under 10,000 feet - essentially during takeoff and
landing. Many pilots complain that the radio waves from such devices can
interfere with flight controls.
570.
** PROGRAM THE UMPIRE
(CIO, 5/15/93, pg. 24)
John McEnroe won't have umpires to verbally abuse anymore, at least not at
this year's United Sates Open. Tournament officials have approved the use
of a new automatic line-calling system. The TEL line monitoring system
relies on special tennis balls infused with iron particles and buried cables.
